ROYAL CONNECTION - One of these boxes was admired by the late Queen Mother
when she visited
Benney's workshop. She stroked the enamel lid with the back of her
hand saying 'Oh how beautiful'.
Unfortunately she was wearing a large diamond ring.
There
was a zipping noise like the first skater
on an ice ring. 'Oh dear' she said, The enamel appears to be scratched.' Nothing more was said, the
piece was re-enameled
and the Queen Mother remained one of Benney's most charming patrons.
A different account appears in Graham Hughes' Gerald Benney Goldsmith which makes reference
to
the Queen Mother commissioning one of these boxes for the Shah of Iran and her damaging
it upon
delivery. Gerald Benney assured the account here is the correct one.
